The monthly update and the EU

The monthly update email is not offered to people in the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA). The EEA is the EU plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.

Everything else on Privacy Map is open to everyone, wherever you are. That includes the map, every jurisdiction and instrument page, the Changes page and the Atom feed. None of it asks for or keeps anything about you.

Why

Privacy Map is run by jamiecurle ltd, a small company in England with no presence in the EU.

An email list is the only part of Privacy Map that keeps personal data: subscribers’ email addresses. A UK company that offers a service like that to people in the EU comes under the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). It must then appoint a representative inside the EU (GDPR Article 27) to act as a point of contact for people and regulators there.

For a free email that holds nothing but addresses, we’ve decided not to do that. We’d rather not offer the email in the EU or EEA than offer it without meeting every rule that applies. That’s why the sign-up form asks you to confirm that you are not in the EU or EEA.

This isn’t a judgement on the GDPR. It’s a good law, and Privacy Map covers it in depth.

What “in the EU or EEA” means

It means where you are when you sign up and read the email, not your nationality or where you’re registered as living. If you’re a French citizen living in Canada, you can subscribe. If you’re American and living in Spain, please use the feed instead.

How to follow every change from the EU or EEA

  • Atom feed. Add it to any feed reader for the same updates the email contains. Your feed reader fetches a file from this site, just as your browser fetches a page, so we keep no list of who follows it.
  • Changes page. Every addition, update and removal, with a link to each instrument.

If you’re in the EU or EEA and already subscribed

Please unsubscribe using the link in any update. Unsubscribing deletes your address straight away. If we learn that a subscriber is in the EU or EEA, we delete their address.
